First Year Curriculum

Regions Emergency Department

• 14.2 weeks
• Primary responsibility for patients under faculty supervision
• PGY-1 emergency medicine residents will work approximately 55 hours per week.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit

• 5.8 weeks
• Participate as member of the Trauma Team on Trauma Activations
• Resident has same level of responsibility as PGY-1 in surgery
• Majority of time spent with SICU patients on the Trauma Service

Cardiology

• 4 weeks
• Patients requiring cardiology consultation
• Resident works directly with attending Cardiology staff

Medical Intensive Care Unit

• 4 weeks
• Patients admitted to the ICU and CCU with primary responsibility for patient care
• Resident has same level of responsibility as PGY-1 in internal medicine

Obstetrics & Gynecology

• 4 weeks
• Labor and delivery and outpatient clinics

Orthopedics

• 4 weeks
• Provide emergency care for orthopedic problems in the emergency department and orthopedic outpatient clinics

Anesthesia

• 4 weeks
• Opportunity to learn endotracheal/nasotracheal intubation, use of pharmacologic adjuncts to intubation
• Clinic experience in ophthalmology and plastic surgery.

Children's Hospital - Minneapolis

• 4 weeks
• Evaluation and management of pediatric patients with urgent medical and surgical conditions.

Plastic Surgery

• 4 weeks
• This time is focused on management of hand injury, as well as exposure to management of wounds in general

Emergency Medical Services

• 4 weeks
• Ride with ambulances
• Opportunities for air ambulance experience
• Structured educational experience in prehospital medical control
