Orthopedics
Educational Objectives: Demonstrate the knowledge
and skills to identify fractures and dislocations by physical examination and
radiographic interpretation. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary for
initial management of these injuries, including closed reduction, local and regional
anesthesia, arthrocentesis, and splinting. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills
to distinguish those injuries requiring immediate orthopedic intervention from
those which can be splinted and referred for follow-up. Demonstrate the knowledge
and skills to evaluate patients with tendonitis, bursitis, monoarticular arthritis,
and osteomyelitis. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to evaluate patients
for complications of orthopedic problems such as nerve, tendon and vascular injuries
and compartment syndromes.
Description of clinical experiences: These
goals and objectives will be met by a one and 1/2 month rotation on the orthopedic
service during PGY-1. These rotations will include the initial evaluation
and management of patients with orthopedic complaints, under the supervision
of an attending orthopedic physician. The resident will see orthopedic consultations
in the emergency department as well as attending all orthopedic clinics.
Description of didactic experiences: ED
residents will be expected to attend the following Orthopedic conferences:
X-ray conference held selected Thursday mornings from 7AM-7:30AM. Fracture
conference presentation Thursday mornings from 7:30AM-8:30AM.
Evaluation process: Residents will receive
a written evaluation after completing the Orthopedic rotation, and also fromthe
ED rotations. Residents are evaluated on their knowledge base, procedural
skills, and their facility in communicating with patients, family, and other
medical personnel. A logbook will be kept by each resident to document procedural
experience. Oral examinations, a national in-service examination and case
presentations are also used in evaluating residents.
Feedback mechanisms: Several times during
the year the preceptor meets with the resident. In addition, the program
director will meet with each resident two times each year to review the department
evaluation of the resident. More immediate feedback will be provided during
clinical activities by orthopedic faculty on duty, or ED faculty.
