Pediatric
EM - First Year
Educational Objectives: Demonstrate appropriate
knowledge and skills in the initial evaluation of pediatric patients with acute
medical or surgical problems by obtaining an adequate history and physical examination
which is pertinent to the presenting complaints and age of the child. Demonstrate
appropriate knowledge and skills in the recognition and treatment of common pediatric
illnesses and injuries. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of development milestones
expected for children of certain ages. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and
skills in the psychosocial aspects of pediatric care including the recognition
of the family at risk for child abuse and neglect.
Description of clinical experiences: Patients
will be evaluated and treated daily at the Pediatric walk-in area. Residents
will have the opportunity to follow specified patients who are admitted to
the ward. Residents will attend certain relevant specialty clinics such as
neurology and pulmonary. Formal and informal teaching sessions will be scheduled
by the Department of Pediatrics during the one-month rotation. There will
be no call on the ambulatory pediatric service.
Description of didactic experiences: Formal
and informal teaching sessions will be scheduled by the Department of Pediatrics
during the one-month rotation.
Evaluation process: Residents receive written
evaluations after completing their rotation. Residents are evaluated on their
knowledge base and facility to perform procedural skills as appropriate for
their level of training. All residents are required to keep a logbook of
all their procedures. In addition to the rotation evaluations, residents
are evaluated during their PALS course, the oral examinations administered
to all residents annually, the national in-service examination, and case
presentations at conference.
Feedback mechanisms: Several times during
the year the preceptor meets with the resident. In addition, the Program
Director meets with each resident twice each year to review the department's
evaluation of the resident. More immediate feedback is provided by the faculty
on duty in the Pediatric Ambulatory Clinic. Such feedback is considered most
important in the resident's education.
