Pediatric
EM - Third Year
Educational Objectives: Demonstrate appropriate
knowledge and skills to resuscitate infants and children with acute life threatening
emergencies. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills to treat infants and
children with urgent or acute medical or surgical problems. Develop facility
with procedural skills used in caring for infants and children with emergent
or urgent medical or surgical problems.
Description of clinical experiences: This
rotation consists of 1 month at Childrens Health Care - St. Paul Emergency
Department. Residents will rotate in the PGY-3 year. The emphasis of the
rotation will be clinical evaluation of infants and children with emergent
and urgent problems. The emergency resident will work an average of 40-45
clinical hours per week. Clinical shifts should not be scheduled during conference
hours. The resident will be responsible for evaluating patients in the Children's
Health Care - St. Paul ED under the supervision of the attending faculty.
Residents will have the opportunity to evaluate the complete spectrum of
clinical problems presenting to the ED and gain experience with the relevant
procedures.
Description of didactic experiences: Each week the resident is required
to attend the ED Conference while at Children's Health Care. Additionally,
the resident will present during the city wide Pediatrics EM Conference held
monthly while they are on the Pediatrics ED rotation.
Evaluation process: Residents receive written
evaluations after completing their rotation. Residents are evaluated on their
knowledge base and facility to perform procedural skills as appropriate for
their level of training. All residents are required to keep a logbook of
all their procedures. In addition to the rotation evaluations, residents
are evaluated during their PALS course, the oral examinations administered
to all residents annually, the national in-service examination, and case
presentations at conference.
Feedback mechanisms: Several times during
the year the preceptor meets with the resident. In addition, the Program
Director meets with each resident twice each year to review the department's
evaluation of the resident. More immediate feedback is provided by the faculty
on duty in the ED at St. Paul Childrens. Such feedback is considered
most important in the resident's education.
