Educational Objectives: Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in the assessment and resuscitation of critically-ill surgical patients. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in the management of the surgical intensive care patient, including fluid and blood product replacement, ventilator management, critical care pharmacology, hemodynamic monitoring and management, nutritional support and the treatment of complications. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills with the invasive procedures required for intensive care unit resuscitation.

Description of clinical experiences: The resident will participate in the initial evaluation and treatment of patients admitted to the SICU. In addition, there will be complete and ongoing care of assigned ICU patients. While on the SICU Service, the resident will function as an integral member of the SICU Team, which consists of SICU staff, SICU fellow, one PGY-2 EM resident, two PGY-1 surgical interns, and a PharmD resident. The Emergency Medicine PGY-2 will be the senior resident on the service. The SICU is a consulting service. The SICU is responsible for daily care matters. The general care plan is established by the primary service. Communication with the primary service is essential to SICU patient care.

Description of didactic experiences: Attendance at rounds and formal and informal teaching conferences is expected.

Evaluation process: Residents receive written evaluations after completing the SICU rotation. Residents are evaluated on their knowledge base and ability to perform procedural skills.

Feedback mechanisms: Several times during the year the preceptor meets with the resident. In addition, the Program Director meet with each resident twice each year to review the residents evaluations. More immediate feedback is provided by the SICU faculty.
