Educational Objectives: Demonstrate appropriate
knowledge and skills in the assessment and resuscitation of critically-ill surgical
patients. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in the management of the
surgical intensive care patient, including fluid and blood product replacement,
ventilator management, critical care pharmacology, hemodynamic monitoring and
management, nutritional support and the treatment of complications. Demonstrate
appropriate knowledge and skills with the invasive procedures required for intensive
care unit resuscitation.
Description of clinical experiences: The
resident will participate in the initial evaluation and treatment of
patients admitted to the SICU. In addition, there will be complete and
ongoing care of assigned ICU patients. While on the SICU Service, the
resident will function as an integral member of the SICU Team, which
consists of SICU staff, SICU fellow, one PGY-2 EM resident, two PGY-1
surgical interns, and a PharmD resident. The Emergency Medicine PGY-2
will be the senior resident on the service. The SICU is a consulting
service. The SICU is responsible for daily care matters. The general
care plan is established by the primary service. Communication with the
primary service is essential to SICU patient care.
Description of didactic experiences:
Attendance at rounds and formal and informal teaching conferences is
expected.
Evaluation process: Residents receive written evaluations after
completing the SICU rotation. Residents are evaluated on their knowledge
base and ability to perform procedural skills.
Feedback mechanisms: Several times during the year the preceptor
meets with the resident. In addition, the Program Director meet with each
resident twice each year to review the residents evaluations. More immediate
feedback is provided by the SICU faculty.
