The goal of
our residency program is to train highly competent emergency
physicians interested in a career that combines clinical
practice with non-clinical emergency medicine activities,
i.e., EMS, teaching, administration, research, involvement
in local, state and/or national emergency medicine organizations,
or one of the subspecialty areas of emergency medicine.
Therefore, the primary objective of the residency is to
develop highly competent emergency medicine specialists
able to practice in any emergency
department environment. In addition, we provide residents
the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of non-clinical
emergency medicine activities such as: EMS, Toxicology,
and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
The program balances the educational needs of the residents
with the medical needs of the patients by having appropriate
faculty supervision in the department. Most times this
involves two faculty present in the department. The ED
is divided only by acuity. All
patients in the ED are triaged into a resuscitation area,
acute area, or intermediate acute area. The ultimate patient
care responsibility is the staff physician's. Residents
have the opportunity to see all types of patients. They
are supervised by attending staff and have
graduated responsibility. To complement their ED training,
the residents also rotate through various other outpatient
and inpatient venues. The attending staff are an integral
part of the residency. All are involved in the education
of residents. The majority have
dedicated time for educational and investigative pursuits
that are associated with the program.
