Critical Case Conference


Purpose
To discuss decision-making on the most critically ill patients seen in the ED

5-6 days in advance (Thursday/Friday) - faculty coordinator will assign cases to faculty and resident. (Program administration may contact the resident.)

Initially the resident will be assigned one case, but as the year progresses, may be assigned two cases.

Format:

  1. One case 20-25 minutes
  2. 2-3 other cases, emphasis on specific points
  3. Start with goals
  4. End with summary
  5. Faculty to manage progress/moderate
  6. Faculty to invite guest speakers

Resident Role

  1. Coordinate presentation of cases with faculty
  2. Faculty ask specific resident to present case
  3. Determines materials needed for conference and who is to get them. This includes being sure the EKG's and X-rays will be presented.
  4. Coordinate with faculty whether Radiologist will be needed.
