Vacation Policy

To outline the resident' s role in scheduling vacation.

Vacation Resident vacation amounts are as follows:

  • PGY-1: 2 weeks (14 calendar days) and the last week of June (6/24-6/30)
  • PGY-2 and PGY-3: 3 weeks (21 calendar days).

The vacation calendar year is July 1 through June 30.

Generally, vacation time is to be taken in 1 week intervals.

Vacation time for residents does not carry to the next year.

Vacations must be approved by the affected service.

Also note when scheduling your vacations, the weekend before your vacation begins you may be asked to take call.

When you are away, you are responsible for providing coverage for activities for which you would be otherwise responsible, such as didactics, and special presentations.

Guidelines for Vacation/Conference Requests

PGY-1

  • requests for the first six months are due May 1st.
  • Requests for the last six months are due November 1st.

PGY-2 and PGY-3

  • requests should be submitted by May 1st.

Requests for vacation must be approved by the Associate Program Director and affected service prior to booking any flights, hotels, etc.

Time off for job interviews

Vacation time or weekends must be used for time off for job interviews

Policy
Procedures
  1. Complete a vacation request form to designate the specific week off, and return to the Residency Coordinator for off-service notification.
  2. Notify the chief resident of all vacation requests for back-up scheduling purposes.
