Event or Mass Gathering Medicine
1. State Fair: The MN state fair occurs each summer in St. Paul and draws between 115,000 and 250,000 people daily. The event gives the fellow an opportunity to learn about the development of an on site medical infrastructure as well as the impact which the influx of people has on the existing prehospital care system. Issues relating to medical staffing of personel and supplies, location of aid stations, access issues for ambulances, crowd control, coordiation with local ED's and on site communication are stressed.
2. Twin Cities Marathon: An urban marathon run in October in the Twin Cities drawing approximatly 15,000 runners. The fellow will be involved in determining staffing levels and transport plans for St. Paul Fire, the main EMS agency for the event. There will be opportunities to consider the impacts on the larger community wide emergency care system.
3. Stillwater Marathon: Unlike the above event, the Stillwater marathon takes place in a more rural area of the state with only one hospital within 20 miles.
4.MN Wild/Excel Center: Regions ED physicians provide on site medical coverage for fans at the Excel center, a sports arena capable of holding 18000 spectators in downtown St. Paul.
5. MN Vikings: Regions ED physicians provide on field airway coverage for NFL players during home games.
