Educational objectives:
The goal of this rotation is that the resident will develop the skills and knowledge necessary to evaluate, and treat surgical and trauma patients with acute serious surgical problems.
Objectives:
1. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in the assessment and resuscitation of trauma and critically-ill surgical patients.
2. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in the management of the surgical intensive care patient, including fluid and blood product replacement, ventilator management, critical care pharmacology, hemodynamic monitoring and management, nutritional support and the treatment of complications.
3. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills with the invasive procedures, such as tube thoracostomy, rapid sequence intubation, placement of central venous lines, placement of arterial lines, required for intensive care unit resuscitation.
Description of clinical experiences:
Residents rotate for 1.33 months on the SICU during their PGY-1 year. The emergency medicine resident will evaluate and treat patients in the surgical intensive care unit. The resident will function as a member of the ICU team; they will participate in caring for patients brought to the ICU. The SICU resident has opportunities to respond to Trauma Team Activations.
Description of didactic experiences:
Clinical teaching sessions are held by the SICU staff on a daily basis. In addition residents attend teaching conferences of the Department of Surgery including trauma video review and chief's conference every week. Finally, EM residents are required to attend weekly EM teaching conferences.
Evaluation process:
A written evaluation is completed by the attending physician(s) at the end of the rotation.
Feedback mechanisms:
Feedback mechanisms: Residents receive a written summary evaluation that is completed after the resident has completed the rotation. This evaluation is available for the resident to review and is part of the formal review that residents receive every six months. Informal feedback is also given to the residents during the rotation. This includes feedback by the SICU Director and staff.
