Educational objectives:
1. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in recognizing typical presentations of common and life-threatening toxicologic problems.
2. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in differential diagnoses of toxic syndromes and treatment of common and life-threatening toxicology problems.
3. Demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills in ordering diagnostic and therapeutic procedures on poisoned patients.
4. Demonstrate a basic understanding of important toxicokinetic and pharmacokinetic concepts.
5. Demonstrate understanding of the contents, uses and limitations of the Poisindex and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
5. Demonstrate understanding Poison Center data collection system.
Description of clinical experiences:
The goals and objectives above will be accomplished during this four-week rotation by working directly with the toxicology faculty physician and the poison information specialists. This includes working in the Poison Center, doing bedside consults, participating in attending rounds, and preparing toxicology presentations. The resident will work 1-2 days per week in the Poison Center and see Emergency Department and in-hospital consults. Diagnoses and treatment plans will be discussed with the Toxicology attending and recommendation offered to requesting health care providers. Residents may also answer telephone consults coming to the Poison Center and speak directly with the caller, under direct supervision of Poison Information Specialist Supervisors.
Description of didactic experiences:
Residents will actively participate in weekly case conferences and bi-monthly Toxicology and monthly Emergency Medicine Journal Clubs. Residents are expected to attend the weekly emergency medicine conferences.
Evaluation process:
Residents receive a written evaluation by the supervising toxicologist upon completion of the Toxicology/Poison Center rotation. Residents are evaluated based on the completion of reading and lecture assignments, attendance and participation at didactic sessions as well as their knowledge, clinical skills and professional attitude.
Feedback mechanisms:
Residents are given immediate feedback by ED and Toxicology attending staff. Any specific issues will be addressed in the written rotation evaluation.
